Not Feeling Festive? Let’s Talk About It

Ah, Christmas. The season of joy, togetherness, and… endless Mariah Carey. For many, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. But for others, it’s a time when the world seems to sparkle a bit too brightly, reminding us of losses, struggles, or just how lonely this season can feel. If you’re in the latter group, let me say this: you’re not alone.

Let’s have a chat, just you and me. Kettle on? Great.

When the Festive Glow Feels a Bit Dimmer

The festive period can be tough for so many reasons. Maybe you’re missing someone special, navigating complicated family dynamics, or feeling the pressure to join in on celebrations when all you want is a quiet evening and your favourite blanket. It’s okay to feel this way.

And let’s be honest: the glossy adverts showing laughing families in matching pyjamas don’t help. (Who even has the time to coordinate pyjamas, anyway?) But here’s the thing – Christmas doesn’t have to look like that, and it certainly doesn’t mean drowning your feelings in booze or reaching for something stronger.

Why Substances Won’t Fill the Gap

It might feel tempting to numb the pain with a drink (or five), but let’s call it what it is – a short-term fix that often creates long-term problems. Alcohol or other substances might quiet the noise for a moment, but they don’t heal wounds or bring lasting comfort. And waking up with regrets (and possibly a headache) is not the Christmas vibe we’re going for.

Instead, what if we tried something different this year?

Finding Connection in Unexpected Places

Loneliness often makes us feel like we’re the only one without a party invite, but the truth is, so many people feel the same way – they just don’t post it on social media. Connection doesn’t have to look like a big, loud gathering; it can be as simple as a chat with someone who “gets it.”

That’s where Inspire and our wonderful partners at Emerging Futures come in. Whether you need someone to talk to about grief, loneliness, or substance use, we’re here. And Emerging Futures are absolute stars when it comes to family support – they’re like the wise older sibling you always wished you had.

Practical Tips for a Brighter Festive Season

Here are a few ideas for navigating the season when it feels a bit heavy:

  1. Start Your Own Traditions
Who says Christmas dinner has to be turkey? Have pizza, or pancakes, or whatever brings you joy. Put your favourite movie on (Die Hard is a Christmas film, by the way – I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise).

  2. Reach Out
Sometimes, the hardest thing is sending that first message or making that first call. Whether it’s to a friend, a support group, or Inspire, reaching out can be the first step toward feeling less alone.

  3. Volunteer
Helping others can be a brilliant way to ease loneliness and bring a sense of purpose. Plus, it’s hard to feel down when you’re handing out mince pies or cheering up someone else.

  4. Go Substance-Free
Stay present. If the thought of doing Christmas without alcohol feels daunting, know that you’re not the only one who feels that way. Inspire can support you with practical tips, encouragement, and a friendly ear.

Remember: It’s Okay to Not Be Okay

If the idea of Christmas fills you with more dread than delight, that’s okay. You’re not a Grinch (although the Grinch is a bit of a mood sometimes). You’re human.

The festive season can be tough, but it doesn’t have to break you. Whether it’s grief, loneliness, or just the sheer chaos of it all, there’s no shame in needing support. Inspire is here, ready to listen. And if family issues are at the heart of it, our friends at Emerging Futures are just as ready to help.

So this year, let’s do Christmas our way – with a little self-compassion, a touch of humour, and the knowledge that we’re never truly alone.
